Dear art & literacy lovers:

A year ago, we were amazed by the success of "Somethin' To Crow About, 2009" at ArtBox gallery. Here we are again with Lois & me scramblin' 'round and gettin' the students' creations together for the 2nd annual art & literacy exhibit, "Somethin' to Crow About, 2010." It never would have happened without your generosity. To honor all of our original sponsors and supporters, we are proud to name them as honorary sponsors regardless of any current contributions for sponsorship. All support in any form will be appreciated even if it is to wish the kids well. Last year, the schools collectively earned $4,500.00 with a distribution of $900.00 each in gift certificates for art supplies.

Prizm Art Supplies added 25% to the proceeds. This year, they will make a contribution again.

The funds originated from a combination of very generous sponsorships for the project and donations for the art.

The tax deductible contributions are made to VSA, whom in turn funds this all inclusive education through the arts project.

The funds are presented as gift certificates distributed in equal amounts to the 5 schools, regardless of the number of students per school.VSA has 50 students; Indianapolis Early Learning Center has 12 students.

The essence of the project is as follows: They are making it together. The students create visual art from their interpretation to the literature. Collaboratively using their education and talents, they create work to sell to their community in an open market to fund their own art programs & supplies. The associative experience is about access and participation in this wonderful side of life.

“Somethin’ To Crow About, 2010” opens on IDADA First Friday, June 4.

“Making It Together”, They Fund Their Own Arts.

Budget cuts won’t steal the arts from these students’ lives; they fund their own arts programs by, “Making It Together.” On Friday, June 11 at ArtBox gallery, VSA arts will host a special opening reception of “Somethin’ to Crow About, 2010” subtitled, “Making It Together”.

Through this unique arts and literacy project, “Somethin’ to Crow About, 2010”, the students are immersed in a month-long adventure that couples the joy of reading with the making of art. Under the direction of artists Lois Main Templeton and Phil O’Malley, the students create individual and collaborative artistic responses to the literature through music, movement, drama, paint, and a field trip to a real farm which culminates to an ultimate “hands on experience.” An exciting addition this year; the young artists collaborate with Lois and Phil by painting over an original Templeton and an original O’Malley.

The entire project is spearheaded through the collaboration of VSAarts Indiana with ArtBox, created & directed by Phil O'Malley & Lois Main Templeton. VSA arts sponsors and participates in this inspiring exhibit featuring creations by the student entrepreneurs from VSA arts, St. Mary’s Child Center, Little Doves Child Center, Indianapolis Early Learning Center, Paramount School for Excellence, plus Lois Main Templeton, Phil O’Malley and many other VSA arts Teaching Artists. This exhibit will also house a satellite of VSA Indiana’s enROUTE Gallery’s June show, - All Kids Can Create - a statewide visual conversation of the Indiana entries from VSA's national children's art exhibit. The national exhibit opens in DC this month.

Through June, the students auction their paintings to fund their arts programs. Prizm Art Supplies will enhance your winning bid by adding to the total. The proceeds from the auction will be divided amongst the participating schools. Bidding can also be tracked and placed on the ArtBox website at www.artboxindy.com.

We are very grateful to Jason Myers, owner of ArtBox, for donating his gallery to host this exhibit during the month of June.

All the above made by individuals ages 4,5, & by VSA clients both children and young adults, (it is all inclusive) about 80% are children. 2 Templeton paintings, 3 O'Malley paintings, some prints, sculpture, and ceramics by a few other VSA Teaching Artists.Plus,a satellite exhibit of VSA's enROUTE Gallery's June show, titled - All Kids Can Create - a statewide visual conversation of the Indiana entries from VSA's national children's art exhibit.

Lois Main Templeton, Coming Full Circle

There is something irresistible about the idea of "coming full circle." Lois Templeton embodies all that is full, rich, and bright about that notion. Upon graduating Magna Cum Laude from Herron School of Art in 1982, her inaugural exhibition took place right here at the JCC. And here we are, 27 years later, once again responding to the remarkable images of MS. Templeton.

The irony is that this intensely literary painter and published writer originally chose art school so she wouldn't be required to use words! Besides, "I loved the smell of the art building."

A painting, she says becomes rich only when it has lived a life. "I like to leave evidence of this process on its face, if you will." Now, in her 80s, "I care about the land and about solitude, silence, space."

Templeton, ever the student, has been struck by the definition of the word 'frontier.' A frontier has been described as the 'hither edge' of open land. That edge, she says, "is where I find myself when I'm painting."

Templeton also finds herself in her downtown Indianapolis studio, where she's been known to camp out for days, absorbed in the topography of paint and canvas. Now in front rank of Indianapolis artists, Templeton has carved out a style marked by abstract imagery and fragments of realism, often tempered by scraps of poetry and such.

Templeton would claim her return to the JCC has been preceded by a good deal of meandering, but like the swallows of Capistrano, she's back. As she is wont to say about things that defy easy categorization, "It's duck soup, dear!"
